Clubs and Activities


 
Each year a voice of the student survey is conducted to see what clubs and activities our students want. Teachers are also asked what they have a passion for and have the experience to lead. By combining these two we offer a unique set of clubs and activities to our students each school year.

Anime Club

Club description encompassing a culminating project(s):

During our meetings, students will be learning about the Japanese culture, discuss important events depicted through anime, raise awareness of social issues through anime and deepen the understandings of sociological, historical and psychological aspects of today’s event depicted through anime. In addition, we will host recreational events such as viewing anime music video, reading manga and participating in crafts, karaoke and cosplaying. Further, students will be attending field trips to Little Tokyo, Cosplay Expo, Anime Expo, Japanese American Museum and more. The club’s focus will be to bring students who not only enjoy the community that the club brings but also be critically minded toward current events taught through anime.

Bible Study Club

The purpose of this club is to introduce the Bible as a book that can help guide students in their everyday activities including social interactions, planning and organizing their time productively and around key priorities such as school and family life.The Bible Study Club will use as a vehicle the concept of stewardship to promote an appreciation for the physical environment and care for the planet. This will be a re-enforcement of the IB Profile attributes of caring for natural resources.

Explorers Club – 9th and 10th Grade

The Explorer Club aims to promote physical, mental, and social discovery. We encourage participants to be risk takers, seeking new opportunities that promote personal growth. Ms. Ortega will serve as the 9th-grade advisor at Huntington Park High School; Mr. Ojeda will serve
as the 10th-grade advisor at the Gage site. Both teachers will meet with the club members once a week during lunch and report back to one another, ascertaining that all members are on the same page regarding upcoming exploration events. Additionally, we can sporadically have
meetings via Google Hangouts if we have an agenda that requires realtime communication between 9th and 10th-grade members. We, ideally, will have one outing per month on either a weekday evening or the weekend. The latter will be contingent on the type of activity (e.g.
hiking; kayaking; play/theater). As an explorer, one is required to maintain academic good standing; bi-quarterly grade checks will be made.

Photography Club

The purpose of this club is to use photography to introduce students to a deeper understanding of the many aspects of society and the physical environment that surrounds them including different races, social economic groups, nature, concepts of physical design. This focus will incorporate many elements of the International Baccalaureate program as highlighted by the IB learner profile. In capturing these images the purpose will be to increase an understanding of the need to be caring, knowledgeable, reflective and open minded..

Pride Alliance Club

The Pride Alliance Club (P.A.C.) is student-led that aims to create a safe, welcoming, and accepting school environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. P.A.C. is providing a supportive environment for LGBT students, as well as those who have LGBT friends or family members, or just care about LGBT issues. P.A.C. is for students who want a safe, supportive space where they can be themselves.Pride Alliance Club will help make the school safe for all students to work together to take on issues that affect all students including harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. During our club meetings, students will be learning about the importance of acceptance, respect and being Proud of who they are or who they protect. Discussions of awareness in the community, safety in school, and learning about programs for the LGBT community. In addition, guest speakers will come and speak about their experiences and/or of what they do for the LGBT community. Further, students will be attending field trips to LGBT centers and Pride events and more. The club’s focus will be to bring students together and reinforce that they are not alone “Together we are stronger”.

Virtual Reality Club
VR Club
Teacher: Mr. Seth King

The Virtual Reality Club met Wednesday’s at Lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 in Room #6 this past semester. We did not get going until October, but once our VR headsets arrived many students became very excited and enthusiastic about participating in our club.Virtual Reality works with learning in an innumerable number of subjects especially through our vendor Nearpod’s licensed content, and the 25 VR headsets that we received from Nearpod this semester are also compatible with hundreds of free VR cell phone apps.

We used our club meeting time to explore VR cell phone apps as well as online videos and articles which inform students all about the emerging world of virtual reality and how it is also being used in educational subjects such as ELA, Math, Science, Astronomy, Anatomy, History, Social Studies, Geography, and even things like virtual travel.
